I just heard on the radio that Blackhawk Technical College is going to move to ban pepper spray, as well as other weapons from their campus.
To enforce this ban, are they going to have TSA style gropedowns to ensure no one violates the concealed carry ban? Naked body scanners? Metal detectors at all entrances? Armed guards?
Is it going to take another incident like the Virginia Tech or NIU shootings before these ivory tower mega-minds figure out that denying people the tools of self-defense just makes their campus a free-fire zone for anyone who is looking for many unarmed victims?
Pepper spray is usually carried by women to defend themselves from assault. For instance, Beloit College has installed a number of outside security phone kiosks to help alleviate this risk, so I have to think that the risk is a real one. BTC has declared that they do not want their female students to carry their own self-defense, they would rather the victim be lucky enough to be near a phone, if one is available, or that they try to call for help from fellow students.
Remember - when seconds count, the police - or campus security persons - are only minutes away.
The BTC spokesman did mention one serious security issue - should students leave their guns in plain sight in their cars? What a stupid comment - visible valuables are tempting theft targets, and a gun out in the open would be doubly tempting for a criminal who needs that little extra persuasion for their victims. I have doubts about the intelligence of anyone who leaves a gun in plain sight in a vehicle, and worse doubts about the official who finds it necessary to mention this fact!
