Kirsten Gillibrand is the dame who ran on a platform of being a gun-owner and pro gun rights, if I remember correctly - and since has found her true calling as one of Chuckie's sycophants. The only civil rights she is 100% behind involve killing people long before they could ever vote non-Demonrat, apparently. Call a spade a spade, Chuckie - it's not reproductive rights, it's ABORTION. 


Personally, I think the Supreme Court overstepped their bounds in Roe vs. Wade, and that the federal government has no interest whatever in sex or reproduction - either pro or con. At the best, it should be a state's rights matter.


If enough people get elected and propose a Constitutional amendment defining person-hood beginning at birth, then there's a legal basis to outlaw it. I am fearful of any new federal law being enacted - any law at all - seeing the track record of our "legislators". Every law they have passed in the last 100 years or more has turned out to cause problems, or has been corrupted and warped away from its' original purpose.

I wrote this a few years ago, after moving to Beloit from Cary, Illinois. Somehow, I thought moving out here would allow more freedom. Silly me.

I have in front of me an incomplete copy of the “Town of Beloit General Zoning Ordinance”, revised, and adopted August 5th, 2002.

In reading this document, I am struck by how far we have strayed from the visions our founders had for the way people live in this country.

Almost every aspect of life is regulated through this document. I am particularly concerned about the rules for agricultural land. The law has essentially made illegal the traditional family farm through rigid rules and definitions that seem to have been copied verbatim from some master document without any regard to the effect they will have on the community.

Following these rules, our country will never again see a traditional farmhouse, or a true Victorian “painted lady”, or a barn constructed by traditional methods. All of these have been outlawed in various ways.

It is illegal to open a small business on your property and “hang a shingle” letting your neighbors know that you are open for business – these activities now require a separate building in an area zoned for that purpose. Never again will we see a craftsman making furniture or an artist painting in their homes – because it violates the letter of the law.

It is illegal to have a second dwelling on your property in agricultural zoned areas. Say goodbye to a “mother in law” house, or giving your newlywed child a home on the family farm, so they can help out and preserve the farm.

It is illegal to have any employee on an agricultural plot, if the employee lives on site. You are prohibited by law from having a live-in nurse, farmhand, groundskeeper, or anyone else that might enable an elderly farmer to continue farming, or even living, on his own property.

It is illegal to store any “goods” for a “home occupation” on the property. One cannot pursue any trade that would produce a product, regardless of whether it would affect the quality of life in the neighborhood.

It is illegal to have a second story, or loft, over a garage, or to have an “accessory building” (read, barn) with a hayloft.

One cannot erect an antenna tower – such as used by radio amateurs – without first obtaining permission from the Town Board – who can refuse such permission as they feel fit. Simply stating rules for setbacks and maximum height is not enough – more control is required.

It is illegal under the law to post a political campaign sign in your front yard, again without a written permit from the Town Board. What ever happened to freedom of speech and our right to engage in political discussion?

A catch-all provision – Section 2.03 B 3 – prohibits “Undesirable Objects or Structures” – which directly prohibits a child’s tree house or playhouse, personal auto repairs if they cannot be performed within a garage, and anything else that the Town Board decides not to enjoy seeing. This gives those in power carte blanche to lord it over the people whom they should be responsible to, in any way that they see fit. In particular, this clause gives those in power a huge stick to quell political dissent, lest the dissenters be found in violation of this clause and fined, or imprisoned.

It is interesting to me that this document is rife with improper references – a Xeroxed copy of a list of amendments refers to sections that do not exist in the copy of the ordinance provided to us, and many things mentioned in the ordinance are not present – such as maps and included tables. The document is not available on-line, although the Town of Beloit has a beautiful web page describing the beauty of a housing development that was undertaken by the Town of Beloit without proper authorization by the people – a development that has lost the Town much money, and resulted in a lawsuit by some of the people supposedly served by the Town. The lawsuit was, of course, defended against using tax money – and the plaintiffs were ultimately bankrupted in their effort, as might be expected.

Since this document is not openly published on-line, it is impossible for citizens to read and understand it unless they go to the Town offices during business hours to purchase a copy. The Town of Beloit has not seen fit to provide a copy of the law to the local library – as any prudent person would expect them to do.

This last fall, an officer of the Town Board – charged with ferreting out violations of the ordinances, visited our property and issued a warning notice because we had several collector vehicles parked off a driveway, behind a garage – out of the public view – but illegal by the letter of the law that requires a “hard parking surface”. The officer bragged to my wife of issuing “over 400” tickets for violations – each of which would result in a fine of at least $100 for the property owner if not corrected in short order.

One neighbor has 10 acres of land, zoned agricultural, and was told he cannot keep “construction equipment” on his property, even though he runs a construction contracting business and was using the machinery on the property. None of his neighbors have ever raised an objection about this storage – but it’s against the letter of the law.

Another neighbor got a ticket for parking their own vehicle next to their driveway with a For Sale sign showing – because the car was resting on grass, not on the driveway. This was not a case of a pickup truck on blocks in weeds three feet high – this was a clean vehicle being sold by it’s owner – but again, in violation of the letter of the law.

Other neighbors were prosecuted for having a small two-wheel trailer, because it had no license plate – which is not required under Wisconsin law – parked on the grass next to their garage. I have a similar trailer I kept parked behind my garage – on the grass – next to that collector car I mentioned earlier. The enforcement officer neglected to mention it in his warning letter.

In my opinion, zoning laws are much abused and overweening in their scope, and a serious effort should be made to trim them back to the minimum required to preserve the quality of life in our community.

Nanny state protectionism

I've been thinking about laws meant to protect people from themselves in one way or another. The July 4th holiday always brings this to mind with the obligatory front-page warnings in the local paper about the dangers of fireworks.

How does any government that claims to be supporting freedom get off making any law aimed at forcing anyone to do something or not do something strictly for their own safety? The very idea ought to be anathema to a freedom-loving "legislator".

The only laws that should ever be passed are those which further the overall freedom of the people - and not "freedom from", ever. Americans should always be free to experience the consequences of their own actions, for good or bad. The only time the government should step in is if one person's actions cause injury to another or to some others property - and then only at the complaint of the injured party or a witness to the injury.

If children are shielded from all danger while growing, they will never mature as fully-functioning citizens of a free state. Of course, such defective children are key ingredients of a true nanny state. Without a cowering populace, the nanny state could not survive.

When will we wake up? Tomorrow may be too late. When will America realize... Politicians are what is wrong with America ? This goes for BOTH parties... Republicans and Democrats, there is no difference anymore... they all do only what they can to be re-elected, not what is best for the citizens!

Amen - but I would add that any politician who betrays his/ her oath of office by introducing an un-Constitutional bill, gets treated as a traitor in wartime. The gallows ought to be out front of the Capitol, and proceedings televised on C-Span.

Also, the free health care, exemption for the Ponzi scheme known as Social Security, and lifetime retirement pension after one term have to end. CONgresscritters need to be housed in a barracks equal to what boot camp enlistees get treated to, ditto food - and health care. They can stay healthy by walking to work, which should be a minimum of one mile from the barracks.

Air conditioning needs to be removed from the meeting rooms and the main halls in the Capitol, and CONgress needs to meet only during the hottest part of the summer for two months maximum. After that, they go home. The longer they are in session, with "creature comforts", the more likely they will be to enact something stupid.

The Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution needs to be repealed. Ditto the 16th. Senators need to be appointed by governors, not popularly elected, and CONgress needs to go on a diet, not have a feeding tentacle in everyone's wallet.

An amendment requiring that ten laws be removed from the books for every new law passed - including budgets, which need to be truly balanced, would be nice, as would a requirement that every new bill come with a Constitutional justification for its' enactment. See the first line.

THAT constitutes a good start for ME.

Let me make this eminently clear. With the exception of the recently repealed Glass-Steagall Act, which needs to be put back in force immediately, there are more than enough laws on the books NOW to handle corrupt banks and dubious financial practices. Enforce what is already there.

Require the Federal Reserve to open its' books for a true accounting of its' dealings over the last couple decades. Require them to operate openly - no "secret deals".

Hi, Judy,

Thanks for the letter remarking on my filling out your online survey. It brings home to me the reasons our Founders did not bequeath us a democracy.

Democracy entails rule by the majority, and the enslavement of the minority. When laws are made because 51% or more of those polled are in favor of some restriction on our freedoms - such as the right to decide not to patronize a restaurant because they cater to people who, possibly unwisely, but then, that's no business of government, decide to smoke, and the owner of the restaurant decided to allow such behavior.

Such as voting to encumber our citizens with police out to arrest those imprudent enough to not wear a seat belt, disregarding the fact that all adults are responsible for their own safety, and should not have to be forced by the government.

Our state is rapidly descending the slippery slope that leads to what our friends in formerly "Great" Britain have pioneered - the "nanny state", where Britishers are not allowed to change their own light bulbs, lest they electrocute themselves.

I repeat what I have stated many times in my emails to you - what Wisconsin needs is less legislation, not more. We need to go back to a part-time assembly, and get rid of full-time "lawmakers" who figure their success by how many bills they can foist on our citizens.

We need to remove all subsidies from our budget, for whatever reason. If people are in dire straits, they should apply to private charities, which will have plenty of money available for the truly needy, as long as our government stops stealing the money folks would donate to charity voluntarily.

In short - take a vacation. Stop proposing bills. Vote against anything that supports increases in governmental spending. Vote in favor of anything the reduces the size and burden of government. Vote to repeal any and all laws now on the books that restrict personal freedoms in any way. Follow the Wisconsin and US Constitutions in their original words and spirit, not in some tortured interpretation that supports whatever new "law" some career politician has devised to further enslave us.

We supposedly fought a war back in the 1860s to eliminate forced labor by one people for the benefit of others. Our modern government has successfully enslaved more people than ever to paying taxes for services that are not wanted or needed, and in a sane society, should not even be offered.

If it comes to a vote, please vote NO on this treaty, which gives international control over American's God-given right to self-defense, not to mention being in direct opposition to the basic law of our country, the US Constitution.

Letter to my state senator

We in Wisconsin need much less government, not more. We should eliminate redundant government agencies, reduce the number of people on the state payroll, and lower state taxes to encourage businesses to settle here.

To balance the state budget, the first thing to do is repeal all the expensive social engineering that has been enacted under Governor Doyle. Once all the entitlements are removed, then look at money being spent on boondoggles like 'high speed' rail to be provided by a Spanish company, for a rail line no one will use unless Illinois' Emperor Daley succeeds in suckering the International Olympic Committee to put the 2016 Olympics there.

If you want to do a real service to our citizens, you will introduce or offer to sponsor a bill reaffirming Wisconsin's sovereign status as an independent state and reject further attempts to federalize us.

Police ask owners to keep record of serial numbers: 46 guns stolen so far in Beloit

Gun owners in Beloit need to be responsible by recording their weapons' serial numbers and storing them properly, which will help prevent thefts and help recover them after a burglary.

Exactly HOW does recording serial numbers help prevent thefts?
Proper storage is a no-brainer, if one is intelligent enough to be trusted with a weapon.

“It's hard to track weapons without serial numbers,” said Deputy Police Chief Norm Jacobs. “Most people would feel terrible if they had a weapon stolen from their home and a year or two later it came up used in a robbery or in an incident where someone got hurt.”

I suppose these people would be carefree if they had recorded the serial numbers, and later the gun was used in a crime. I love how officials try to work emotion into everything.

Why, exactly, do the police need to "trace" a weapon? If they can show it was used in a crime, it's evidence, obviously. If the possessor is not allowed to have that weapon, how is it important where he got it?

Jacobs said 46 weapons were reported stolen in Beloit so far in 2009, and several were taken in home burglaries. Others were taken out of automobiles when owners were illegally transporting them. Jacobs noted that in Wisconsin a gun must be unloaded, encased and located in a non-passenger area of the vehicle.

In other words, the only way to transport a weapon in Wisconsin is to make it unusable as a defensive device. Typical Democratic mindset - only the police and 'trained professionals' can carry ready to act - the rest of us need to call 911 and pray.

How does one who owns only a pickup with an open bed transport his legally possessed weapon?

Notice how the guns 'taken out of automobiles when owners were illegally transporting them' are rightly listed as 'stolen'. Nowhere in the Second Amendment do I see any requirements for enclosing an unloaded gun while transporting it.

Theft is still theft when a government official does it.

Or, did I misunderstand, and people illegally transporting weapons called the cops to report their illegally transported guns were stolen? I know crooks are generally stupid, but this is akin to the stoner calling the cops because his roomie smoked all the weed.

Of the weapons stolen only about half the owners were able to give police the serial numbers. Only 17 of 46 weapons were entered into a stolen gun database used by law enforcement across the country to identify stolen weapons.

Why were not all 46 entered into the stolen gun database at least by make and caliber?
I would like to have seen statistics on how many of those guns were returned to their rightful owners who DID have the serial numbers.

Jacobs said that weapons stolen so far this year include: .357 magnun Ruger revolvers, 9mm Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun, 6 shot Derringer, Winchester shotgun, and a Remington Arms 308 rifle with scope.

Interesting, but not pertinent. The thieves take what they find, and the cops recover what they find.

“These stolen weapons are untraceable with no serial number. As with any weapon, they never go away, sometimes bounding from thief to murderer until years later being used to hurt someone,” Jacobs said.

Again with the anthropomorphizing of an inanimate object. As if the guns would somehow refuse to jump into the arms of another crook if their numbers were written down in the cop's records, or even in the theft victim's records.

Actually, these weapons are eminently traceable if they were manufactured since the BATFE started requiring manufacturers to serialize and record the guns, and who they were shipped to. At least, in theory - IF the BATFE hasn't lost the records from closed gun shops, something they are legendary for doing...

Any modern firearm with an obliterated serial number is the tool of a criminal, plain and simple.

Gun serial numbers are located on various parts of the weapon depending on the make of the gun. Jacobs stressed that honest gun owners don't take the serial numbers off weapons.

Why would ANY sane gun owner want to mutilate his property? The serial number is important not only to help a theft victim get his property back, but it allows the owner to reliably order parts or get the gun serviced - or be made aware of recalls or defects.

“People who aren't interested in a safe community won't record serial numbers or act responsibly. We are not asking anyone to register weapons, we are just asking to record the serial numbers in case they are stolen,” Jacobs said.

Idiots who don't care if they recover their property don't keep track of serial numbers.

People not interested in a 'safe community' are of two kinds - those who will not take responsibility for their own safety - i.e., 911 callers who would never own a gun, and criminals.

Jacobs said that police see these stolen weapons sold from city to city and then used in small time robberies and sometimes gang shootings.

Exactly how is this going to be helped by legal owners recording serial numbers? He's trying to put a guilt trip on the honest folk, possibly softening us up for that mandatory gun registration - so we can get 'em back if they are stolen.

Right...

“It might be time for Beloit to consider an ordinance requiring owners to supply a weapon serial number to report a theft if they expect their property to ever be returned,” Jacobs said.

OK. So what happens if you DON"T keep the numbers and report the gun stolen?

How about a lot of folk who got the guns through private trades now just don't bother to tell the cops about the theft, to avoid the penalty?

Guns without serial numbers can be destroyed by police.

Guns WITH serial numbers can be destroyed by police - and have been. They have also been stolen by police, from the evidence lockers, and returned to the streets - Chicago had a problem of 'crime guns' returning to the evidence lockers multiple times.

Karen Thorson, an identification technician at the Beloit Police Department, said she drives guns to the Wisconsin State Crime lab when they need to be destroyed properly. Thorson said there are two locked closets full of guns at the Beloit Police Department and the number of guns is increasing.

It's nice to know that those guns are being euthanized in the correct manner. Wouldn't it be even better for the City of Beloit to sell those guns to legitimate owners if their original owners cannot be found? At least this would add some cash to the coffers of a struggling city, and provide Beloit residents with a source of reasonably priced defensive weapons.

Of course, we can't do that! That would result in more guns out there, and the people certainly cannot be trusted with the means to defend themselves!

Open letter to Tammy Baldwin

Ms. Baldwin,

Evidently, you missed out in school when they discussed the
Constitution of the United States - you know, that thing you
swore to uphold and defend when you took office?

Article 1, Section 9, is explicit:

3 No bill of attainder or ex post facto law shall be passed.

The recent 'tax the bonuses' law you voted for is such a bill,
and therefore un-Constitutional.

Why don't you call for an investigation of Mr. Chris Dodd, who
wrote explicit language into the bailout bill to allow exactly
this kind of bonus payment - after he and your glorious leader
Mr. Obama both accepted generous campaign contributions from AIG?

We do not live in a democracy, and, God help us, we will not
live in a socialist / Communist state. Please take that and your
solemn oath to the People of Wisconsin into consideration the next
time you vote.

The GIVE Act is another issue that should not be supported. America
functions on voluntary volunteers - not drafted slaves. With an
economy like ours, the government should not be passing more
laws providing more spending - quite the opposite.

While I'm in the mood, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of
2009 - H.R.146 and the Federal Land Assistance, Management and
Enhancement Act - H.R.1404 are two more issues that the federal
government has no business exploring, either morally or from a
pragmatic financial basis.

Remember who you are - a part-time employee of the citizens from
your district - and begin to act accordingly, if you wish to keep
your job.
