It's not CONgress forcing a "default"
It's Jugears - IF he acts as he has so often in the past...
Obama's Big Lie-There Won't Be Default Unless HE Ignores Constitution (We're Already Over Debt Limit)
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void. US Constitution, Amendment 14 Section 4The President is doing his best to frighten Americans and our creditors by claiming if the GOP does not capitulate to his demands and "cleanly" raise the debt ceiling we will default on our debt, damaging forever the full faith and credit of the United States. Simply put, that is a lie!
In fact we are already over the debt limit and the sky hasn't fallen. The present debt limit is $16.999 trillion. According to Treasury Direct, the Dept. of Treasury's website the US has already surpassed the debt limit by over $47 trillion.
If the October 17th deadline is passed without an increase in the debt ceiling it simply means the government can't borrow money and has to "live" on the tax revenue it takes in each month (about $250 billion). Interest on the federal debt runs about $20 billion each month leaving money left to run parts of the government. And that's what Jugears cannot abide - living within "his" means. As a good would-be Communist elite, he feels he's entitled to live like a king while the proles adore him from afar.

More shutdown
Priests facing arrest if they say Mass to Catholic servicemen - voluntarily:
Shutdown Impacts Chapel Services
Shutdown Impacts Chapel Services
There is a chronic shortage of active duty Catholic chaplains. While roughly 25% of the military is Catholic, Catholic priests make up only about 8% of the chaplain corps. That means approximately 275,000 men and women in uniform, and their families, are served by only 234 active-duty priests. The temporary solution to this shortage is to provide GS and contract priests. These men are employed by the government to ensure that a priest is available when an active duty Catholic Chaplain is not present. With the government shutdown, many GS and contract priests who minister to Catholics on military bases worldwide are not permitted to work – not even to volunteer. During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so.Emphasis mine.

On Wisconsin!
I am SO PROUD to be a Cheesehead today...
Wisconsin Nullifies Park Service Shutdown Order
The governor of Wisconsin, who has previously publicly stated his intention to resist Obamacare, had his state’s Department of Natural Resources reject federal requests to close portions of parks in the wake of the federal government’s shutdown. The Wisconsin DNR also reopened a boat launch that the federal government had closed down on Tuesday.
As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
“The park service ordered state officials to close (portions of national parks), but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion’s share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had also closed down a boat launch, but “in a sign of defiance, the DNR removed the barricades at the landing, saying it had the legal authority to operate the launch under a 1961 agreement with the federal government.”Let’s ignore for a moment the idiocy of closing park land because of Congress can’t decide exactly how much it should add to the ballooning national debt. What Wisconsin has done is quite heroic. In the face of childish federal “take my ball and go home” tactics, Wisconsin has told the feds to go away, that they can handle the expenses of maintaining these parks without federal “help.”
Governor Walker advised the federal government to “Look at what we did in Wisconsin. We had a $3.6 billion deficit; we now have more than a half-a-billion-dollar surplus.” Walker added, “I think not just in Wisconsin but in states across the country there’s a lot of governors and lawmakers in both parties who wish the folks in Washington in both parties would act more like the states and less like our nation’s capital.”

I thought the federal government shut down! Who is paying for this server?
UPDATE: I got a letter telling me my ham radio license expires in January -so I went to the FCC's renewal website. Found this:
Telecommunications companies must continue to use the Network Outage Reporting System (NORS), which will remain available during the shutdown, to file reports of telecommunication service disruptions pursuant to Part 4 of the FCC's rules. NORS allows companies to file Notifications, Initial Reports and Final Reports. The information on service disruptions is essential to maintain and improve the reliability and security of the telecommunications infrastructure.
Vacancy announcements for positions that were open for receipt of applications have been closed and will re-open when the Government is operational.
During this time, the FCC is not accepting any deliveries of supplies, or services that have not been identified as necessary for the safety of life or the protection of property.
The Commission has issued a Public Notice concerning procedures for submissions that would be due to the FCC during the shutdown.

It costs nothing but power bills to let a website run on a server - but it costs real money for some programmer to write even a simple page like this and post it to that same server...
Shutdown
OK. The federal government is "shut down" for lack of money. 5/6 of Jugears' personal servants in the White House are on layoff.
There's no money to "run" the national parks or monuments. Especially the ones that require absolutely no human attention on a daily basis - like the veteran's memorials, that are in the open air and have no gates or admission hours, let alone attendants.
Somehow, though, Jugears has found the money to have a bunch of Park Service employees place barricades across sidewalks and in the grass to keep WWII vets away from their monument - the monument paid for with tax money, and their blood, sweat, and tears.
Somehow, the money was found to keep mounted park police on duty for the express purpose of preventing American citizens, especially veterans, from paying their respects to the fallen at them.
Several right-thinking members of Congress went out yesterday to remove the barricades Jugears personally ordered erected. Those barriers were reinstalled again today.
If the government was truly shut down, someone should have switched Jugears off for the duration.

Scam? (Not really)
Just got this:
Dear State Association Leader, State Associations continue to serve in a critical role as the state-level delivery system for NRA programs. The NRA depends on State Associations to promote these programs within their states and motivate NRA-affiliated clubs and grassroots volunteers to activate these programs in their local communities. The NRA wants to identify the ways we can assist State Associations to accomplish this task. Please visit the link below to complete your state association's 2013 Annual Report no later than December 1, 2013 so that this information may be presented to the NRA Clubs & Associations Committee at the January 2014 Meeting.

Small problem is - I'm not a "State Association Leader".
Also, all the links go to emails at the domain "nramedia.org", which does not pull up a web site unless you append "www." at the front of the URL - and that pulls up a login page with the NRA logo. No idea if it's legit. Not about to click on any of those links...
Update - just got this:
We sent out an email on this list earlier today regarding state
associations. If you are not a member of the leadership of your state
association, please disregard the message; it went out to several email
addresses erroneously.
Thank you for your continuing partnership with the NRA.
