News report: Janesville has just purchased an "electric motorcycle" so the police can patrol the bike trails without having to lose their doughnut guts.

The Madison reporter breathlessly described it as "silent, and it doesn't emit any carbon!"

Unless the Janesville Police Department has erected a wind / solar charging station for this thing, it either burbs coal, natural gas, or uses nuclear power. "Renewable" energy is still a bit player in our power grid, and will remain there for the foreseeable future.

Also, isn't there a law against using motor vehicles on the bike paths?

An officer interviewed said he has to use his horn or call out to avoid startling people biking or walking, since the thing is so quiet.

What's wrong with having police officers in shape enough to ride regular bicycles? I'm sure that motorcycle cost the people of Janesville a pretty penny - or the entire USA, if it was bought with a "grant" from the feds...

Discussions of racial problems almost invariably bring out the cliche of "a legacy of slavery." But anyone who is being serious, as distinguished from being political, would surely want to know if whatever he is talking about -- whether fatherless children, crime or whatever -- is in fact a legacy of slavery or of some of the many other things that have been done in the century and a half since slavery ended.

Another cliche that has come into vogue is that slavery is "America's original sin." The great Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said that a good catch phrase could stop thinking for fifty years. Catch phrases about slavery have stopped people from thinking, even longer than that.

Today the moral horror of slavery is so widely condemned that it is hard to realize that there were thousands of years when slavery was practiced around the world by people of virtually every race. Even the leading moral and religious thinkers in different societies accepted slavery as just a fact of life.

No one wanted to be a slave. But their rejection of slavery as a fate for themselves in no way meant that they were unwilling to enslave others. It was just not an issue -- until the 18th century, and then it became an issue only in Western civilization.

Millennials in San Diego signed a petition to ban and replace the American flag, as seen in a video published on Monday.

Mark Dice, a media analyst, started a fake petition that called for the removal of Old Glory and then filmed himself as he walked around San Diego asking young adults to sign it. Even with the approach of Fourth of July weekend, a surprising amount did.
"These millennials have been indoctrinated by their communist college professors, indoctrinated by the liberal media, poisoned by today's pop culture into really being ashamed of America and so afraid to be politically incorrect that … they are now willing to replace, ban the American flag, issue a new flag," Dice said on "Fox and Friends" on Tuesday.

Dice called the results "absolutely astounding," when more people than he expected readily took up the cause of his fake petition.

I suppose we should replace it with something like this:

The Court used Section 1 of the Fourteen Amendment to justify their argument, which reads:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. By using the Constitution in such a manner, the Court argues that the Due Process Clause extends “certain personal choices central to individual dignity and autonomy” accepted in a majority of states across the state lines of a handful of states that still banned the practice.
The vast majority of states are “shall issue” on the matter of issuing concealed carry permits, and enjoy reciprocity with a large number of other states.

 I've always thought the "full faith and credit" clause was sufficient to allow concealed carry - or open carry, for that matter, anywhere if it was allowed in your home state, but I'm not rich enough to own a staff of lawyers to bail me out.

I wonder who will be the first test case to carry in Illinois based on a Wisconsin CCW?

Another simple solution

About identity theft - all CONgress has to do to eliminate this problem is to make the lender responsible for issuing a fraudulent loan - not the person defrauded.

I personally know of a case where a person with "power of attorney" for an elderly person's finances went into a bank and had the woman sign for a mortgage - the proceeds of which the person with power of attorney promptly stole and spent. The woman's estate was subjected to legal action by the issuing bank - for a loan made against a property in trust, without even checking to see if there was a clear title for the property in question. The heirs had to pay off the bank - and their lawyers.

With a law as I suggest in place, the bank would have had no recourse except to prosecute the person with the power of attorney who was guilty of not only fraud, but malfeasance.

The answer to the "gay marriage" issue

Is extremely simple. All the states need do is cease issuing marriage licenses altogether. End of controversy.

As long as states required testing for STDs, there was a legitimate reason for a state to issue a marriage license. Public health is a legitimate concern of state government.

Since the advent of AIDS, many states have dropped the testing requirement - and so, have lost the only justifiable reason for licenses. Of course, there is always the issue of fees and taxes, but I would believe that the costs outweigh the income and the controversy.

No state licenses would make the Supreme Court ruling meaningless. If two people want to get married, they can find a suitable preacher or "justice of the peace", or just declare themselves married. That's how it worked for hundreds of years. Common law marriage is still observed in several states. Custody of children, inheritance, and such issues have lots of legal precedent, as do contracts and "pre-nup" agreements.

Of course, we should expect that there will be cases where preachers will not want to participate in an action they find sinful or wrong. Lawsuits will undoubtedly follow.

Abraham Lincoln has been quoted as stating he had no interest in having Negroes in the US - he was in favor of returning them to Africa. The 13th Amendment was more about politics than justice. His presidency set the stage for the huge increase in federal power we suffer under today.

This image is only objectionable to people who intend to ignore history. Like the lawsuits against Indian team names and mascots. Such will ultimately result in an America that does not remember it's history - and that suits the liberals just fine.

A total of thirty-five people have been killed in Baltimore in the month of May, bringing the death toll to 108 since the beginning of the year.

Congressional Democrats are proposing to ban plastic guns, following reports of major security lapses at the nation’s airports

Plastic guns can be even more dangerous than traditional firearms because they're harder to detect, says Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.).

The Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act, backed by Israel and several other Democrats, would prohibit the manufacture of entirely plastic guns. The legislation would require a major component of every gun to contain enough traces of metal to be detected.

Listen to the logic:

"If detectable weapons can make it through security checkpoints, how can we expect to catch wrongdoers carrying undetectable plastic firearms?" Israel told The Hill. “What could be worse than a gun that can be used on an airplane, but cannot be detected on the security line because it’s plastic?”
"It’s time to modernize our airport security so the American people can count on it," he added.

OK. The TSA gropers can't find conventional weapons that easily trip metal detectors and show up clearly on X-ray. So, let's pass a law banning the nonexistent so when it shows up in someone's carry-on, they won't be able to see it anyway, and criminals will ignore the law  and print out one-shot handguns any time they want, as criminals do not obey laws, stupid or otherwise.

Representative Israel should try living in the real world, where criminals ignore laws they find inconvenient and realize that the cat is out of the bag re: firearms and solid printers.

Since "undetectable" guns are, in fact, undetectable, the only way to ensure they don't get on airplanes is to make every passenger strip naked, submit to a thorough cavity search and MRI (lest they have an implanted WMD), and wait while all their carry-on luggage - and every checked luggage item - is opened and searched by at least three independent teams - with all activities recorded to prevent theft and other fraud. The passengers will have to board naked, and be placed in straitjackets, belted into their seats, which will have to be transparent so any surreptitious Houdinis can be identified before they escape their bonds.

Only then will air travel be safe from passengers who intend mayhem.

I expect one of our solons like Rep Israel or Nancy Pee-Lousy to propose such a bill right after the Demonrats win the 2016 Presidential race. It sure won't fly under a sane President.

Democrats like Nancy Pelosi told us "we have to pass it to see what's in it". Now that this horrible mess is in front of the court because of its' unclear wording, we have to expect the Republicans, who had nothing to do with the creation or passing of this mess, to take the blame for its' failure.

Here in Wisconsin, the Demonrats have used the police to terrorize people who supported Act 10, one of Governor Walker's reforms that removed the power of the public unions to demand raises and benefits from their employers, the people of Wisconsin. The Demonrats were understandably irked, as those public unions are some of their biggest supporters.

The National Review has a good article about how innocent families were subjected to tactics last seen in Hitler's Germany when the Gestapo raided the homes of anyone suspected of less than adoration of Der Fuhrer.

Go read - and then demand your local representative open an investigation into the Demonrats who ordered these raids, and bring charges against them. I will.

Another useless law attempt

New York congressman Steve Israel wants to ban "undetectable" 3D printed guns. 

Yet another law in search of a problem. For criminals, stolen or black market conventional guns are ever so much easier and cheaper to obtain, and a few orders of magnitude more reliable.

As far as "undetectable" goes, so far I haven't seen a printed gun that does not have at least the chamber and barrel made of metal. A fully composite gun today might be good for a couple shots before the barrel melted. Perhaps someday we will be able to print ceramics suitable for gun barrel pressures, but not in the near future.

Jugearscare follies

We started looking into health insurance through the "marketplace", since we can't afford Cobra right now. All the web sites referred for us require a phone number before you can look at pricing, so I put in my FAX number.

Turns out to have been a smart thing to do - I've had at least 100 calls come in on the FAX line since yesterday.

I picked up a couple before the machine could try to connect - dead silence even after I said "Hello". For the couple that did connect me to a human, I told them this was a FAX line, and please don't call back.

There must be a whole lot of potential profit for the insurers in getting someone to sign up for them to be so persistent...

So, if we want to save the manatees, we need to keep the Florida coal plants running  - or, we could do a truly green thing and replace these plants with nukes burning thorium...no evil CO2, lots of warm water - and cheap, clean power...

How New Jersey’s Gun Laws Turned Another Law-Abiding Citizen Into A Convicted Felon

New Jersey’s ridiculous gun laws have once-again turned a law-abiding citizen into a convicted felon over nothing more than an innocent mistake. This time the victim is a former security guard and aspiring police officer named Steffon Josey-Davis.

Josey-Davis legally purchased a 9mm Smith & Wesson in 2013. Shortly after he bought the gun, he made the fateful mistake of stashing it in his glove compartment to make sure his six-year-old sister wouldn’t find it.

The gun was still in the glove compartment when, later the same day, state police pulled him over for driving with an expired registration. Because it is illegal for drivers in New Jersey to transport guns in anywhere but the trunk of their car, the officer confiscated the gun and told Josey-Davis to pick it up at the police station.

When Josey-Davis appeared at the station to retrieve his property, he was promptly arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm – a second-degree felony.

Another innocent person's life destroyed because of illegal laws. Go read the whole article.

Recently, I received  a "Determination" telling us we were ineligible for unemployment insurance since we had not supplied proof of identification, i.e., copies my driver's license (both front and back) and of my Social Security card. We included all of this in a fat envelope, and paid extra postage registered mail to P. O. Box 19509.

We mailed this packet over a week ago. Today, I spoke to a nice lady who has the onerous job of handling calls from irate people like me who are entangled in the bureaucracy of Illinois unemployment insurance. She told me that I needed to not only send the information that I had sent, but also a formal letter requesting that you accept that data and reinstate my claim for benefits. She also said that the copy of my Social Security card was not in the scanned-in documents. It was in the packet originally mailed, so somewhere in your organization, it was lost.

So, here is that letter, asking that you please reinstate my claim for unemployment benefits, along with more copies of everything, again sent by registered mail. I am also spending extra for a return receipt, as I cannot trust your office to handle things without losing pages.

Why it is necessary for a claimant who has records on file from Illinois employers as to employment history to provide a copy of a Social Security card that plainly states "FOR SOCIAL SECURITY AND TAX PURPOSES - NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" is beyond me. Though since I am simply a college graduate electrical engineer, perhaps I am just too stupid to understand the marvelous complexity of Illinois unemployment law.

Back when I first got signed up with the Science Fiction Book Club, I got a copy of "FROOMB" - a novel by John Lymington. It was a bit adult for a 12 year old, but the title has stuck with me. It refers to a political cartoon of the world at the wheel of a car careening down a slope toward a cliff. The world cries "Fluid's running out of my brakes!".

In an effort to take back their government from self-serving politicians and bureaucrats, Kraft and Allen established a group called the Edgar County Watchdogs. Through a combination of public pressure, Freedom of Information filings, lawsuits, and media exposure, they have created a system that deeply threatens Illinois' corrupt, entrenched political establishment. They operate a blog called Illinois Leaks that exposes corruption at the state and local levels. The blog is so popular that, it is trusted more than the local paper.

Considering the fact that, according to Forbes, their home county's government has racked up over $79 million in debt all on its own while serving only 18,000 residents, Kraft and Allen have their work cut out for them.

By relentlessly pursuing justice for even the smallest infractions by bureaucrats and politicians, the Edgar County Watchdogs have driven 102 public officials to resign from their posts, including 33 officials in Edgar County alone. The pair busted the mayor of Redmond for attempting to hold office while living out of town. They represented themselves in court and beat Illinois Assistant Attorney General Emma Steimel in a lawsuit seeking access to state e-mails. Officials who have resigned due to the Watchdogs' efforts include a property tax assessor, the Edgar County board chairman, an entire airport board and its manager, the attorney for Kansas Township's fire department, Shiloh's superintendent of schools, and Effingham's health department administrator, among others. After they exposed corrupt, illegal, and self-serving spending habits by the Ford-Iroquois County health department, the entire bureaucracy was dissolved. In some cases, federal agents have even stepped in to investigate and issue subpoenas to local officials after receiving tips from Kraft and Allen.

The Kansas Senate has passed SB 45, the bill that moves Kansas into the constitutional carry status of Arkansas, Arizona, Alaska, Wyoming, and Vermont.  If the bill passes the house and is signed by Governor Brownback, a person who can legally own a firearm and who is 21 or over will be able to carry a firearm concealed without fear of prosecution.   The bill, SB 45 had 26 cosponsors and was introduced by the Majority leader, Terry Bruce, of Hutchinson.  The bill passed with an overwhelming, veto proof, bi-partisan margin of 31 to 7.

The seven members that voted against the bill were: Faust-Goudeau (D), Francisco(D), Hawk(D), Hensley(D), Holland(D), Pettey(D), and Kay Wolf(R).

It's always the ones with the 'D' after their names that vote against the Constitution. The one 'R' is likely a 'centrist' (RINO).

Unemployment insurance follies

Since the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development website won't allow me to fill in the dates I've worked, I dial into the "help" system.

"If you speak English, press 1". I'm curious, so I don't touch the phone,

"En Espanol...dos". I continue to wait.

Some Asian language - Hmong? Cute female voice, anyway. Continue to do nothing.

"Do you speak a language other than English?". More waiting.

Instructions to make sure your phone is set for touch-tone - and if it's a dial phone, please wait.

Finally - "We are going to attempt to connect your call". Nine in line. Time is around ten minutes.

Or, I can ask for "virtual hold", and they will call me back in around half an hour. Still waiting - seven ahead of me now.

They really want me on "virtual hold"...

The Ill-annoys site worked OK, but did ask for my WEIGHT on my driver's license. If all goes well, I'll get benefits in two weeks - about a quarter of what I was earning.

Tax time

Did our taxes today. Only took three hours, including the "e-file". Getting a good refund, at least that's what the filled-out forms tell me. I'll believe it when the checks clear.

Aside from the Wisconsin e-file form not being readable in the browser, but just fine downloaded and opened in Adobe, and the fact that the Wisconsin W-2 form not allowing punctuation and cents where the federal form did, I think I only damned the fed and state IRS to eternal hell with extra brimstone fifty or so times.

Trivia

Been watching reruns of "The Twilight Zone" on the satellite - that channel that once upon a time offered science fiction, but now seems to have the same relationship to sci-fi as the "History Channel" has to actual reality.

Noticed that quite a few of the episodes use chunks of the sets from "Forbidden Planet", including the whole space ship and the ammeters from the Krell laboratory.

The space ship is seen flying upside down in a few episodes, and they seem to have knocked the dents out of the gangway steps the Id monster put in.

The ammeter panels appear is several other spaceships.

Who knew Hollywood was recycling back then?

Norway: Muslims organizing to protect a synagogue from terrorists

And now for something completely different: A group of Muslims in Norway is organizing a protective ring around Oslo's synagogue following Sabbath services this weekend. The effort is a reaction to the shootings in Copenhagen, according to Hajrad Arshad, 17, one of the seven organizers of the "Fredens Ring" (Friendship Ring) (Ring of Peace).

This is what I have been advocating - Muslims standing up for civilized behavior and acting to thwart possible terrorism by those of their faith who take the Koran literally.

I hope this is the start of the end of the Islam as a political force. Likely, though, it's going to result in a bunch of dead Muslims because they dared to go against the terrorist's interpretation of the Koran.

There are about 1000 Jews in Norway - and 200,000 Muslims, almost all immigrants.

The "Fredens Ring" effort is thus not only a gesture toward Oslo's Jewish community, but perhaps also a message intended for some fellow Norwegian Muslims. "Islam is about protecting our brothers and sisters, regardless of which religion they belong to," it says on the Facebook page (according to a translation here). "Islam is about rising above hate and never sinking to the same level as the haters. Islam is about defending each other."

 I have to wonder, though, if this is either very naive, idealistic Muslims speaking, or some staged event to reinforce the "not all Muslims are violent" meme...

Encounters with Monster and the Wisconsin DWD

I have a Monster login, last used about three years ago. So, when a search found a possible job in Janesville right next door, I eagerly clicked on the "apply" button. The Monster login screen appears.

I enter my user name and what I think is my password - it's been a long time. Monster tells me I must have made a mistake - I am trying to access the job seeker's page, and do I want to go to the employer's page instead?

The employer's page is just that - where employers go to post job opportunities. I have never been an employer unless you count the time I paid my two older kids to assemble military battery pack control prototypes for a customer. They learned surface mount soldering, and I got my 25 prototypes built while I worked on other things.

Tried logging in with my Google account, as they suggest. Same result.

So, Monday I'm going to contact the company directly. If they are paying Monster to post jobs, at least Monster should ensure that the website allows job-seekers to log in correctly.

Next stop is the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. As much as I detest asking for government aid, I like to keep my wife fed and housed, and I've paid enough self-employment taxes to think I'm entitled to get something back.

I log in, using the same credentials I had three years ago. It lets me in. So far, so good.

Answer all their questions. No trouble.

Now, they want my work history since I last had gotten a UI check. OK, I'll fill out the forms.

"When did you start this job? If you can't remember the exact date, be as close as you can.". I enter a date in MM/DD/YYYY format, as that is what they asked for in an earlier question - the slashes are mandatory. Tab to the next question - and my entry disappears.

Try again - same result.

Try answering the next question - "When did you end this job?". Same result.

Try clicking on "Next" with both questions unanswered. "You must enter a valid starting and ending date". Also, the website informs me that claim entry will close in 45 minutes. It's a quarter after 6.

Start looking for the "contacts" tab, so I can ask for help or tell them their website is broken. Get a nice list of phone numbers that Ii can't call until next Monday during normal bureaucracy hours.

Fun way to start the weekend.

End of an era

My last day at the "temp to hire" job was yesterday. Everyone came by to shake my hand and wish me well - and express disbelief that I was being let go.

Sat around for 7 1/2 hours and actually had about half an hour of useful things to do.

It would have been more cost effective for the management to have given me a week's severance - I would have had a week of working hours to look for another job, and they wouldn't have had me sitting there for almost 40 hours surfing the Web...

I've got a couple resumes out and the temp agency says there might be a couple opportunities in Rockford for me. I also found one possibility in Janesville - less than ten miles away.

In preparing for a gun transfer, I went to the FBI E-Check page to fill out the Brady check info for the customer.

The on-line form now asks if this is a pre-check for a pawn.

Since when are we supposed to do a Brady check on someone turning a gun in for money?

This might have been SOP forever, and I just noticed now - I'm not running a pawn shop.

Looking for work

Last Friday, the boss called me into his office - says his budget has been cut by 50%, and he has to let me go. This Friday is my last day.

Looks like he is going to send some work towards my business, doing PC boards, though.

I've got several resumes out already. Also the contracting outfit i got in here from is looking for another position near here.

Seems like just last year I was doing this...

Some reporter asked him if he "believed" in the theory of evolution.

He said he's have to take a punt on that.

There's the big trouble with the media, especially the left-leaning ones. They have no clue about real science.

One can "believe" in God, the tooth fairy, or that socialism / Communism will work. One can believe their lottery ticket will win. One can believe in ancient aliens, or that man is causing "climate change".

Theories are there to be disproved or supported. One does not "believe" in them. So far, no one has brought out hard, scientific proof that Darwin was wrong.

Unlike the theory of "climate change".

The Bill of Rights was the make-or-break condition that allowed the Constitution to be ratified. No Bill of Rights, no Constitution. And since all political authority in America "trickles down" from the Constitution, no Constitution no government. And, since the Bill of Rights was passed as a unit, a single breach, in any one of the ten articles, breaches them all and with them, the entire Constitution. Every last bit of the authority that derives from it becomes null and void.

Let's review:

Once again, to make sure that the dumbest lawyer in the room gets it:

Letter to the editor

Beloit got buried last weekend - and as usual, the city could not figure out how to plow the road properly - so, a letter to the editor of the Beloit Daily News:


Before moving to Beloit, I've lived in several places. Chicago, Suburban towns. All of them were able to maintain their roads, especially in the downtown areas where most cities would like people to go to shop and visit.

Beloit, however, can't seem to manage to remove the snow from downtown. After every big snowstorm, there are three and four foot high berms of snow filling the center of the street and most left turn lanes. It's impossible to make a left turn into parking lots. This morning, a car was stuck in the snow left in the middle of Fourth Street by the bridge over the river. Two police vehicles were needed to prevent accidents.

In the paper today, the streets supervisor was quoted as saying they can't use trucks to haul snow because the snow would leave them wet and they can't spread salt from a wet truck.

South Beloit does not seem to have a problem keeping their roads clear. Neither does Rockford.

Perhaps Beloit needs to set aside one or two plow trucks to haul snow, and clean up the mess the right way, right away. Let's see our city have some pride in keeping the downtown plowed properly.


Let's see if it gets printed - they only have letters to the editor one or two days a week lately.

It's about time!

Governor Walker has told us he wants welfare recipients to pass drug tests before getting benefits. The outcry from the left will be loud and vicious.

Let's look at reality - something liberals / Demonrats never seem to do:

In order to drive a truck, one must obtain a commercial driver's license and undergo drug testing, and be subject to random re-tests. Federal law.

In order to fly an airplane, one must obtain a commercial pilot's license and undergo drug testing, and be subject to random re-tests. Federal law.

In order to work at any company that makes parts for aircraft, one must pass a drug test and be subject to random re-tests. Federal law.

In order to work as a regular employee in most any company that has any dealing with the US Government, one must pass a drug test and be subject to random re-tests. Federal law.

In order to work for any number of other private businesses, one must pass a drug test and be subject to random re-tests. Not federal law - yet.

Also - one must state under penalty of law, that they are not users of illegal drugs, or they cannot legally buy a firearm from a licensed dealer - federal law.

But ask people who want to live off the taxes paid by any of that above mentioned people to prove they are not illegal drug users, and the screaming starts.

I would go one step further - require drug tests before voting. There are drug tests that can show use in a minute from urine - let's require everyone to pee in a pot before voting, and if they fail, they get banned from voting for the next four years in all elections.

Perhaps that will break the Demonrats at last...
