They never learn

Went to a "green belt" Six Sigma course yesterday for my employer. The class was held at the Northern Illinois University campus in Rockford.

Prominent signs posted on the drive in to the parking lot - placed out-of-sight of the actual entrance, so you have to drive in and pass it before you can leave the premises (which probably qualifies as a crime in Ill-Annoys if you are a CCW holder - entering "posted" property) state "NO WEAPONS ALLOWED" with a nice Euro-style red circle-slash through an automatic pistol.

NIU, you might remember, was the site of a "school shooting" back in February, 2008, while my daughter was attending. She was nowhere near the actual scene, thank God. The shooting was in part enabled by the law then that prohibited honest citizens in the state of Ill-Annoys, let alone on campus, from having protective devices at hand.

The course instructor marveled at the proliferation of these signs - on public parks, and everywhere hoplophobes and soft-brained liberals rule.

Now, this:

KARMA: Business posts new “NO GUNS” sign; robbed within days, employees beaten

So, the owner of a new barbeque place in North Carolina, Greg Hatem, posts his establishment “NO GUNS” with a custom-made sign designed to make gun owners feel extra unwelcome.

Apparently Greg hates ‘em when it comes to guns.

A few days later, some thugs figure it’s a good spot for a hold up and not only commit an armed robbery, but they beat the employees as well.  Be sure to mosey on over and check out the surveillance video of the attack.  The media described the vicious attack by three armed black men in hoodies who terrorized the staff.  One staff member was taken to the hospital.

The anti-gun owner, Greg Hatem, is offering a $2000 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Hey Greg?  Free advice.  Take the sign down and you’ll better “take care” of your employees and customers.

I hope those employees all sue for violation of their Constitutional rights - and win big. They might end up owning the place.

Side note - one of the other students, sadly an Ill-Annoys resident, told me that Ill-Annoys CCW licenses are going for upwards of $600 when you factor in the mandatory 16 hours of  classroom training, the firms that offer "first try" CCW application success, and the cost of the license itself. I sure am glad to see that the Demonrats in Chicago have managed to effectively eliminate all those inner-city people from ever being able to defend themselves from Chicago's endemic violence via over-pricing an inalienable human right. Perhaps those people will think of this the next time they are bussed to the polls.

I've been watching. My wife enjoys the series - she says she's learning things.

Last night, Neil deGrasse Tyson was talking about immortality. The episode went along nicely with discussion of life traveling between planets and stars.

Near the end, he was talking about how we need to change in order to cure climate change. His script sounded like a Jugears speech about how people will talk about the day the waters stopped rising.

The thing that caught my attention most was when he stated that the consensus is that humans are warming the planet. Earlier, he had stated that the Earth's climate has been both much hotter and much colder than present day, and that volcanoes and other natural events had done the changing. He even stated something about 600 cubic miles or similar number of dust being thrown up by a volcano in Asia, causing cooling and darkening for five years. Yet, Man's feeble CO2 pollution is the proximate cause of "climate change"

Science does not work by "consensus". Either a theory is proven or discarded. Anthropogenic global warming has been pretty solidly debunked over the last few years. That's why the liberals changed the argument to "climate change" - it's easy to scare uninformed people with vague threats when easily disproven threats have failed.

No thinking person disputes "climate change". The real questions are: is there anything we can do to change what is happening, and should we even try?

The unstated fact is that China and India are producing megatons of "carbon pollution" and are increasing their outputs daily, and absolutely nothing Western civilization does to itself can remedy that. All our "climate change" laws and regulations can do is destroy our country and our people.

And make people like Algore, Soros, and Jugears very rich...

So… I almost got in a fistfight today (plus a repost of “Hard Truths About Combat Tactics” with an instructive cat video)

So crazy panhandler dude, seeing that I’m on my own, decides to get bold.  I drew him back away from the tabernacle, still trying to enjoin the “men” to get involved.  Then, crazy panhandler dude charged me.  And here is where the mental preparation pays off.  He was about 15 feet away, and when he charged I thought three things in this order:

1.  Trust in God and fear no man.
2.  Move straight forward into the attack.
3.  Meekness is power under control.

So, when he charged, I lifted my chin maintaining drilling eye contact, threw back my shoulders, dropped my daypack that was in my left hand in an “I’m getting ready to beat your ass in the two-fisted manner of the old school” sort of way, and stepped forward to meet him.

And you know what he did?  Aw, guess.  Go ahead.

Yup.  Player stopped short and backed up.

 The cat in question is the "hero cat" that defended her young boy. The video is pretty graphic - that cat risked death to stop an attack.



Can any of us call ourselves men if we can't at least be as brave as a cat?

Doomed

We are DOOMED.

Only if we don't fight. The Demonrats will keep right on lying and scheming - we can never let our guard drop.

My fear is that the Stupid Party will not offer truly good candidates and many people will just not vote, giving the Demonrats the victory by default.

I believed right up until the night in November, 2008 when McCain conceded that Jugears would never be elected. The GOP ensured his election since so many "conservative" voters couldn't stomach the RINO they picked for their candidate. Ditto in 2012 - picking the originator of the JugearsCare scam as their candidate almost ensured I would refrain from voting, or waste my vote on a third party.

These rats are devious and have some big money behind them. Beat on your local GOP people to get real Constitutional candidates on the ballot in 2014 and 2016.

If we don't, we can all learn to love Big Brother as we wait patiently in line for our soma ration.

Segregation

Recent news articles have been screaming about the new rise in "segregation" occurring in our public schools.

Segregation is defined as "the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment". At least it used to be defined that way.

When used under the original definition, it meant something akin to "apartheid". Blacks were not allowed in the front seats of buses, could not eat in white restaurants, had "separate but equal" schools, had special "colored" water fountains. All enforced by state and local laws. People of mixed race were seen as aberrations, and marrying someone of another race was illegal in some states. These laws were strictly enforced.

Up until the 1960's - when some brave people finally stood up and refused to be treated as second-class citizens. Civil-rights legislation ensured equality in education and voting. Other race-based laws were struck down or repealed.

Then came LBJ's "war on poverty". Among other things, that started the modern welfare state. Lyndon himself was quoted as saying "I’ll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years."

The imposition of welfare altered the playing field. Blacks once had strong families and social structures. Welfare encouraged the worst human traits in it's subjects. Families were destroyed, idleness rewarded with "free" food and housing, morals destroyed by the loss of the atomic family and the work ethic. Too many blacks succumbed to the temptation to sit around and have more babies in order to increase their government checks.

Fifty years later, these people, impoverished spiritually and morally, naturally congregate in the inner cities, unable to earn enough money to move away, incapable of employment in many cases due to the ghetto disdain of education and "acting white".

Gee. Looking at the whole subject from a fresh perspective, I see that "segregation" was cunningly moved from state and local law to the federal level, by the changing of definitions and the inevitable workings of the "war on poverty". Did LBJ and his minions see the final result of their policy?

I think it was premeditated. From the same links above:

America is more segregated in some areas now after 50 years of affirmative action and enforced desegregation than in the 1930s.

No new federal laws will ever fix this. The solution will be extremely painful - cut off the welfare and force people to survive on their own intelligence and will.

There will be blood. Any way we try to fix the mess will result in violence and death.

There's a real good reason I call them "Demonrats".

Wisconsin City Police Refuse to Enforce Public Park Gun Ban

…Chief Beguhn reviewed the local ordinance after Karenz’s complaint and found that the ordinance is no longer valid.

According to GunsSaveLives.net, the chief said the ordinance is invalid because of Wisconsin’s “preemption laws on firearms.” He has ordered signs banning guns to be taken down and pledged that he will not enforce the ban even while the signs are up.

Wisconsin Carry receives credit for bringing the Wisconsin “preemption” to everyone’s attention, and Chief Beguhn has followed up by choosing not to enforce an outdated ordinance.

People these days are brainwashed into being scared to death the moment they see some guy with a gun on his hip. I’m glad that this small city has a police chief that refuses to be ruled by people’s irrational emotions and fears over guns.

The woman quoted does not think guns should be around children - I guess she would object to the police being anywhere near her kids?

It's refreshing to see some of our sworn peace officers refuse to enforce a blatantly illegal law!

Teacher tells student he can't read the Bible in classroom

A Florida school teacher humiliated a 12-year-old boy in front of an entire class after she caught him reading the Bible during free reading time.

The teacher, at Park Lakes Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, ordered Giovanni Rubeo to pick up the telephone on her desk and call his parents. 

As the other students watched, the teacher left a terse message on the family’s answering machine.

“I noticed that he has a book – a religious book – in the classroom,” she said on the recording. “He’s not permitted to read those books in my classroom.”

The Liberty Institute, a legal firm that specializes in religious liberty issues, is now representing the Rubeo family. They are demanding that Giovanni be allowed to read his Bible during free reading time. They also want the school to issue a written apology to the boy.

This teacher needs to be ridden out of town on a rail, after being tarred and feathered. The school board ought to be ushered out the same way if they don't help organize the tarring and feathering, and buy the rails out of their own pockets...

Did US officials really inject men with Syphilis and leave them to die? Did they do this because they hated black people?

If you don’t know what the Tuskegee Experiment was, let me give you a refresher course.

It was 1932 and the Public Health Service along with the Tuskegee Institute started a study to record the effects of Syphilis in black men.

According to the Center for Disease Control, “The study initially involved 600 black men – 399 with syphilis, 201 who did not have the disease.”

Wait, let’s look more closely at that sentence.

It says 399 men WITH Syphilis.

In other words, these men were not injected with Syphilis. They were volunteers who already had late stages of the disease.

Let me say that again, The United States did not inject men with Syphilis during the Tuskegee Study.

What was horrific about the Tuskegee Study was that the men who volunteered as subjects we’re fooled into thinking they were being treated for Syphilis—they were not.

The study was originally projected to last 6 months—but went on to last 40 years. And for those 40 years, even after the discovery of penicillin, the volunteers were not given any treatment for syphilis. They were for the most part treated as objects to be studied under a microscope by a doctor named Dr. Eugene Dibble.

You see Dr. Dibble was head of the John Andrew Hospital at the Tuskegee Institute.  Here’s what he wrote about the study:

It “….would offer very valuable training for our students as well as for the interns. Our own hospital and the Tuskegee Institute would get credit for this piece of research work. He (Dr. Clark) also predicts that the results of this study will be sought after the world over. Personally, I think we ought to do it.”

What an evil white bastard. This white bastard. What a racist whitey. Except that he wasn’t white at all.

Despite the lighting of the photo, Dr. Eugene Dibble was actually African American. But, you could argue that he was just the head of the hospital.  He wasn’t dealing with this every day.

 Too many people eager to see "racism" everywhere, all the time. We forget that people of all races can be evil, or do evil believing they are doing good. All it takes is for a person to forget that all human beings have worth, and should be respected until they personally show themselves unworthy of respect.

Cara’s mother kept her firearms in a safe with an electronic lock. Cara had discovered the code for the lock while rummaging through her mother’s sock drawer weeks ago.
The 9mm pistol inside the safe was a “smart gun.” It only worked if the user’s thumb-print matched a list of authorized users. Luckily, her mother had made her an authorized user when they were at the range last summer. Cara picked up the gun, checked to verify that a round was chambered and that the magazine was loaded before putting it in a holster that she slipped into the front of her pants. She loaded the two spare magazines for the pistol—in her state, you could only have seven rounds in each magazine—and dumped them in her book bag. Her mother’s other handgun, a .40-caliber pistol, had an RFID-activated chip in it just like the local police used, and required the use of a watch with an embedded code. It also required that a four-digit code be punched in immediately before use. Fortunately for Cara, her mother had written down that code on the same piece of paper that held the code for the lock. Cara carefully printed the four-digit code on her right wrist, put on the watch, and covered both with her jacket sleeve before slipping the gun into her jacket pocket. Five spare magazines went into her other jacket pocket. She looked at the clock on the wall. It was time for school.

If smart guns ever make the mainstream - or worse, if they are mandated, as in several Demonrat/Liberal infested states already, this WILL happen. Guaranteed.

The scenario above is fictional, and hopefully it will always remain so.
It was written to point out two truths.

ONE: Given time, technology—no matter how clever—can be defeated, and is often defeated by the simplest of means.

TWO: Technologically complex items always seems fails when it is needed most. This is why professionals opt for the most simple and reliable weapon systems available. This is why the military and police forces utterly refuse to consider “smart” guns. They need to be able to pick up any firearm, and make it fire, 100% of the time. So does anyone else that chooses a gun for self-defense.

Computerizing firearms creates a high level of technological complexity. Systems that require complexity introduce unnecessary failure points, and in the case of smart guns, may cost lives… many lives.

Smart guns are simply not wanted by knowledgeable shooters, and the desire for them seems to come only from those who are afraid of all firearms, and who desire control over others. You can rest assured that like every modern technology, “smart” guns will be built with a government “backdoor” enabling these arms to be deactivated by authorities.

One might even reasonably suspect that being able to disarm everyone with the push of a button is precisely the goal of those who champion such technology.

 Suspect? I, for one, am dead certain of their goal.

Marine With Concealed Carry Permit Saves Woman From Being Beaten To Death

A Wisconsin man who saved a woman from being beaten to death Tuesday morning credits his state’s concealed carry law for giving him the ability to act.

Charlie Blackmore Jr., a 32-year-old Marine Corps veteran, was driving home from work at 4:00am Tuesday when he saw a man violently kicking a large object on the ground. He parked his car to see what was going on and upon drawing closer to the scene, Blackmore realized that the “object” was a young woman.

When the man refused to stop beating his visibly injured victim, Blackmore pulled out his Springfield XDM 9mm.

“I said ‘stop’ and he starts coming towards me and that`s when I drew on him. He started getting closer and I said ‘get down on the ground,’” he told Fox Milwaukee. Blackmore kept his gun on the other man as he phoned West Allis police and reported the incident. The attacker made several attempts to move toward the Iraq veteran as they waited for authorities to arrive.

“I mean I’ve already made it up in mind that if he came at me I was going to have to take him down and I told him that. I warned him multiple times not to come towards me because he was a big guy and I wasn’t playing around and he didn’t seem like he was playing around,” Blackmore said.

Police quickly arrived on the scene and arrested the man. Officers checked Blackmore’s concealed carry permit, took his statement and thanked him, as did the badly beaten woman he rescued. The victim’s left eye was swollen shut and her nose appeared to be broken as a result of her injuries, allegedly inflicted by an ex-boyfriend.

Concealed carry “hero” saves woman being mauled by a dog in Cincinnati

A dog attack ended in Cincinnati yesterday after a passerby drew a concealed weapon, killed the dog mauling a woman, and then simply walked away:

The attack happened in the 2100 block of Selim Avenue in East Price Hill about noon on Friday.

Cincinnati police officers said the victim was attacked by the dog after it broke free from its chain in a backyard.

A mail carrier tried to get the dog off as it began biting the victim, officers said.

According to investigators, as the mail carrier was struggling to get the dog off the woman, another man, who was walking down the street at the time, pulled out a gun and shot and killed the dog.

The dog was killed and the shooter continued walking down the street, police said.

The police say that the man did the right thing and does not face charges. Neighbors say they did not recognize the unknown concealed carrier, but called him a “hero.”

Two Suspects Who Dragged Mom Across a Parking Lot Get a Swift Lesson in Texas’ Concealed Carry Law

A 30-year-old mother is lucky today after the quick-thinking of a stranger helped save her from a mugging.

The mother of two who was dragged across a Texas shopping center parking lot this week, clinging to her purse while two suspects in a sedan tried to snatch it.

That’s when the stranger, who was armed, stopped the would-be thieves and forced them to lie on the ground while they waited for the police to arrive.

The MSM sure is quick to blame the gun - and most "liberal" politicians and police chiefs can't wait to dance in the blood...

Gerry McCarthy, Chicago police  superintendent, pounced on the shooting of a 14-year-old girl this week by another 14-year-old girl, telling the MSM that the gun was "stolen from a car where the concealed carry owner had left it", as if the CCW holder and the gun were solely responsible for the shooting.

The truth will out, though. From Second City Cop:

Before the 14-year-old girl allegedly fired the shot that killed Endia Martin, the .38 caliber revolver had touched many hands.

A south suburban gun shop known for selling weapons later used in crimes in Chicago. A Hyde Park man whose mother did not want the gun in their home. A former Atlanta man now living on the South Side who would appear to be a middleman of sorts in the gun’s journey. The paralyzed uncle of the 14-year-old girl who, prosecutors charged, rode the bus to give the gun to his niece before the fatal confrontation. Someone at the 14-year-old’s side at the confrontation who was savvy enough to quickly fix a malfunctioning gun.

Lies are perfectly OK in the tiny minds of these creeps, as long as they further their quest to render us all defenseless and enslaved by their socialist utopia.

Did they really body-slam our friend, a 59 year old woman to the ground, and sic German Shepherds on our neighbors-even a pregnant woman? Did they actually shock a man multiple times with a 50,000 volt Taser for honorably protecting his aunt, while she gathered herself out of the dust? We reflect in sadness and awe that this could take place in our little town. The terror of armed men occupying our land will never be forgotten. The feelings of despair of these events will long reside in our hearts. Thoughts of anxiousness that this may ever happen again, will awaken us from our pillows from time to time. During quiet reflection, we may ask ourselves if we did the right thing by resisting. Were we in the right when we acted to safeguard ourselves? When the only response to our multiple pleas for help was silence, when we were left alone to clean our cuts and wounds, did we have a divine right, duty, and obligation to protect our family and ourselves? We recall the many times we pleaded with our local government to protect us; the numerous times we called 911, and begged our Sheriff to send his deputies to assist. Our cries of distress were met with silence. We ask ourselves, "Did we try hard enough to get our local government and law enforcement to act as a buffer and perform their duty to protect and serve?" Were the hundreds of phone calls not enough, or is it just that our elected leaders and Sheriff have forsaken the people in trade for power and money? We whole-heartedly want to believe that our Sheriff would not abandon us, but where has his shielding influence been? Why was he not here to represent and protect the very men, women and children of his county that he swore an oath for? Why did he stand silent and neutral, knowing our community was in terror? What was his motivation of inaction; was it fear of the federal government or political reprisal from powerful politicians? The scars of this traumatic event will heal over time. We hope our community will eventually return to a sense of normalcy. We fervently hope and pray that these heavy-handed tactics will not be used on us or any other American ever again. We wonder if our hopes will be in vain; will they return? Will they come back with greater force and more cunning tactics than before? Will our Sheriff keep his oath this time, and use his lawful forces to stop them, or will the people be left to their own protection? Will the good people of this nation yet again have to come running to the rescue of a neighbor? Will veterans, retired police force, churches, businesses, families and individuals have to unite once again to confront these acts of governmental terror upon the American people? Will our local government rouse themselves from disaffection and intervene-protecting the people? Will they stop fearing to do the right thing and come to the realization that the people are more important than a government agency? Will they fight for the rights of the state and her people? They must stop putting personal gain and advancement in front of the rights of citizens. They need to recognize, that as our elected representatives, they have more power than those governing in brute force, as they have the might of the people of this state backing them. With that power we invest in them, they have the obligation to safeguard our livelihoods, combat forces of fear, and protect our lives with their own. A few weeks ago, our community was in a state of innocence and naivety. We felt safe and mostly kept to ourselves. We thought the world's problems would only affect us through television, and could be shut off with the push of a button. Our innocence has left us now, we have experienced first-hand the breath of force upon our necks. We have gasped in desperation as our lives and agency were threatened. Our cries have been ignored by our guardians in the next room. We faced a choice-either lie down and submit helplessly in defeat, or bite, scratch, and fight until help would come. We are eternally and profoundly grateful for the many heroic neighbors who heard our desperate cries and crashed through the windows to rescue. We additionally thank the thousands that came from every States in this great nation, and stood in front of raised guns in our defense, and for the hope that those same guns would never come to their doors and their families. We are grateful for those that arrived with pen and camera, those that arrived with faith and prayers, and those that arrived with fist and gun. The variety of support from all walks of life has shown that this was an event that truly touched the good hearts of many Americans. We cannot thank you all enough-you have restored our faith in the goodness of the American people. Our message to all, is that it is time to make things right. It is time to adhere to the supreme law of the land-The Constitution of the United States. It is time to understand right, stand for what's right, and do whatever it takes to make it right. Raise Illinois wants to raise the minimum wage, which is right now north of $8.50 an hour. They just can not grasp the iron-bound fact that if you do this, businesses have to raise their prices to absorb the cost - or lay off workers. The ultimate costs are always placed squarely on the shoulders of the poorest in our society.

Cliven Bundy has been castigated in the MSM for saying that American blacks were better off under slavery than under modern "liberal" welfare.

I believe that "civil rights" as practiced for the last 50 years, and as designed by that paragon of racial tolerance Lyndon Baines Johnson, is directly responsible for most, if not all, of the black on black and black on whoever violence in our cities.

Welfare and affirmative action have produced more than two generations of people who do not know what a normal family is, who have been systematically trained to look to big government for all their needs, have been trained that working is for fools and that as long as you vote for the Demonrat candidate, you will keep getting free stuff.

Slaves in the Old South had family values and moral training from their parents. They also had something that modern blacks in inner cities do not have - the freedom to escape slavery, albeit at great risk to themselves, and the will to act to better themselves if possible.

I'll wager that if we were to bring a freed slave from the depths of Alabama in the 1850's to our time and show him this, he would recoil in horror:

Bearing false witness

Yesterday, I got broadsided crossing an intersection on my way to work. The Focus will need a new passenger door, possibly a new right tie rod, and serious metal work.

Oh, well, I was going to repaint it this Spring, anyway.

I was driving south on the frontage road to the east of the main road. Stopped at the stop sign at a cross street. Cross street had traffic lined up for the red light - I had to thread past a jerk who pulled past the "DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTION" sign.

As I pulled past him, I caught movement to my right. Swerved left - got nailed in the right front wheel and door by the '99 Town Car that had just made a right turn off the main road, and didn't bother looking where she was going.

Pulled over and got out. The woman driving the Lincoln got out and I asked her if she was OK.

The Lincoln got some scratches on the bumper cover.

She told me she had just turned onto the cross street and I pulled out in front of her. Well, that was pretty much what happened. She called her husband to come out.

Called 911 to report the accident - they hung up on me, or the cell phone lost signal. She called the police direct from 411.

The husband took the woman off for a talk. When the police arrived, she told the officer she was northbound on the FRONTAGE ROAD, and I pulled out in front of her. The only way that would have worked out would be if I was making a left turn. Since my place of work is south on the same frontage road, there is no way I would be making a left at that intersection.

I got a $120 ticket for "improper lane usage". I could go to court, but I would lose more than $120 in lost wages and irritation, and likely would lose. Illinois traffic courts are all about revenue, not justice.

So, now it's up to the insurance company to fight it out. It's possible I will get something to help fix the Focus, but I'm not counting on it.

Driving the Ghia until I at least get the tie rod fixed. I don't need to ruin the front tires driving with extreme toe-out...

The morality of video games

Brian Tomasik is a consultant at the Foundational Research Institute, which explores possible avenues for reducing suffering in humans and other sentient beings, now and in the future. He maintains the website Essays on Reducing Suffering, where he writes on issues in ethics, biology, philosophy of mind, and other fields relevant to the question of how best to reduce the amount of suffering in the world.

Recently, he has become interested in the question of what moral standing, if any, we should give to non-player characters in video games (NPCs). He argues that, while NPCs do not have anywhere near the mental complexity of animals, the difference is one of degree rather than kind, and we should care at least a tiny amount about their suffering, especially as they grow more complex. We spoke on Gchat this past Tuesday. An edited and condensed transcript follows.

Dylan Matthews: What exactly is your view about the moral standing of non-player characters (NPCs)? Is it moral to kill them?

Brian Tomasik: That depends on their degree of sophistication, and whether they're built in a way such that killing them would correspond to something harmful.
Very simple game algorithms would matter to an almost infinitesimal degree, and they may not have responses that we would consider aversive. A Goomba in Super Mario Bros. that just walks along the sidewalk back and forth is arguably as simple as a physical object bouncing back and forth. It doesn't seem to have pronounced goals that are being thwarted by its nonexistence, nor does it have machinery to try and avoid death or feel bad about death.

In contrast, a slightly more complex character that plans moves to avoid being shot or injured by the player of the game has at least the bare outlines of goals and attempts to avoid injury. This case might be marginally ethically relevant. The moral significance would increase further if, for example, the character had penalties applied to its health or wellbeing level as a result of injury, as is the case in some RPGs [role-playing games] or reinforcement-learned game characters.

Present-day video games mostly use extremely simple algorithms that resemble goal-directed and welfare-relevant behavior in very crude ways. They resemble complex, sentient animals in a similar way as two dots and a smile resemble a detailed picture of a face. Hence, it seems plausible to give any single game character extremely small weight compared with vastly more complex forms of purposeful, welfare-relevant behavior in larger organisms like animals.

 If you follow Mr. Tomasik's reasoning literally, you end up with the belief that all life is sacred, and causing suffering to any living thing is immoral. Someday, we might develop a computer program that can qualify as self-aware.

I think any unnecessary suffering is a bad thing - but for the present - computer algorithms?

The bigger problem in my mind with some of these video games is desensitization to violence and common courtesy. They might not be a proximate cause of outright violence, but they can't help matters.

“And it is not clear to me how many LEO and Guardsmen would remain loyal to the government and how many would join the “rebellion”. My guess is that both sides would be riddled with defections, informants, and spies. But what if, say, the Gulf states like Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida secede, and they take control of all military bases and equipment, and you suddenly have gone from an insurgency with rifles to a breakaway nation, or maybe several breakaway nations, armed with fighter jets, drones, tanks, and a navy? Whoo, buddy… now all bets are off… kiss posse comitatus goodbye. This would be the ugliest thing this county has ever seen…”
I asked him several “what if” questions and let him riff on them… I just let him talk and wargame out the Second Civil War, there in the back seat of my car as we drove to the airport, and he painted a picture of horrific death and destruction. Once this conflict started, even the best-case scenarios he described sounded truly grim. He seemed to believe that civilian casualties would be extremely high, given how much fighting would centered in and around large cities, and that food would be used as a weapon, causing famine and starvation on a terrifying scale. Booby traps, IED’s, rampant bombings, drone strikes, snipers, local-level assassinations, mortars and shelling, death squads (both government and rebel), reprisal killings, torture… it sounded more like the Middle East than middle America.

Wheeler got quiet for a few moments, and then he said something that I will never, ever forget.

“These people are playing with matches… I don’t think they understand the scope and scale of the wildfire they are flirting with. They are fucking around with a civil war that could last a decade and cause millions of deaths… and the sad truth is that 95% of the problems we have in this country could be solved tomorrow, by noon… simply by dragging 100 people out in the street and shooting them in the fucking head.”

Those 100 people would be the cream of Congress' liberals, and our "ear leader", I am sure...along with people like Bloomberg, whoever are the present governors of New York and Connecticut, and people like Rahm-it-to-em Emanuel...

My wife inquired about the "bronze" (cheap) Jugearscare plan - $1,600 per month / $19,200 per year. I told her we would like to eat and pay our mortgage - so she signed up for a limited (read - illegal) critical care plan that is cheaper than our present plan - but has a high deductible. We will just have to cope with the IRS' "fine" - that I understand they can only collect from possible tax refunds. I'll just have to adjust my withholding down so I don't have any refund for them to attach.

Also, if I see one line concerning any questions about health care - other than in the itemized deductions - on next year's 1040, I'm going to fill in the line with "NOYFB*", and spell out the acronym at the bottom of the page should the person reading it be too stupid to figure it out. Since I won't be expecting a refund, I'll skip the E-file and mail the thing in. I'm guessing the electronic forms don't have margins you can send those vampires subtle messages in...

Carbon Belch Day 2014

Wow - I missed it. Carbon Belch Day was in March. I mistakenly thought it coincided with Earth Day - when all good Greenie Lefty-liberal Demonrats and their ilk bow down to Mother Gaea and pledge to end the infestation of human beings on the planet.

Damn. Getting my neo-pagan organizations mixed - I conflated the Voluntary Human Extinction crowd with Earth Day. I'm sure there's plenty of overlap there.

Anyway, better late than never. Rode the Suzuki 250 oil-injected dirt bike around the property Saturday- put another 20 miles on it. Let some friends ride also. Took the grandkids for a golf cart ride yesterday - good old Harley-Davidson zero spark advance two-stroke mosquito smoker. Moved a bunch of dirt with the Massey-Ferguson Super 90 Diesel smoker.

Burned trash and brush a couple weeks back - for me, Carbon Belch Day is whenever I go out back, mostly.

Nevada Cattle Rancher Wins 'Range War' With Feds

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters.

Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally.

Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

"I have no contract with the United States government," Bundy said. "I was paying grazing fees for management and that's what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay."

The federal government had countered that Bundy "owes the American people in excess of $1 million " in unpaid grazing fees and "refuses to abide by the law of land, despite many opportunities over the last 20 years to do so."

However, today the BLM said it would not enforce a court order to remove the cattle and was pulling out of the area.

So - we win? Or - are they waiting for the crowds to leave so they can stage a "Waco fire"?

Yesterday afternoon the Federal Aviation Administration designated the airspace above Bundy Ranch near Bunkerville, Nevada a “no-fly zone” with altitude restrictions that effectively ban news helicopters.

Report claims cell towers in Bundy ranch area shut down

On Friday, Static Media Hub posted a tweet that said cell towers in the Bundy ranch area were shut down. According to the message, only radio communications were possible.

"Alert: On the ground reports ~ cell towers shut down, comms thru radio only," the tweet said.

Earlier in the day, a Facebook page supporting the Bundy family said some people were having difficulty using their cell phones. The tweet asked supporters to bring satellite phones if possible.

"Folks, there is a possibility the cell towers have been shut down. People are having trouble calling out, and I cannot get a hold of my people on the ground. I will update as soon as I know more," the tweet said.

"If you are headed to #BundyRanch and can get satalite (sic) phones, they are very much needed," the page said later.

Personally, I love the song so I thought I would share it will all of you.

Hopefully it can get some traction out on the internet and some people who may be ignorant of the 2nd Amendment can hear it and have it sink in.  That’s the great thing about music sometimes, you can learn something and not even realize it.

Government Lies about Standoff with Cliven Bundy – It isn’t about the Tortoise, its About Fracking 

Natural News dropped a bombshell yesterday, and I want to give you an excerpt below. Americans are smart enough to know that our government would not send 200 armed agents to protect some tortoises. It is always about money or resources/assets that can be turned into money. Mike Adams reports:

The Bureau of Land Management says its 200-man armed siege of the Cliven Bundy ranch in Nevada is all about protecting an "endangered tortoise." But a Natural News investigation has found that BLM is actually in the business of raking in millions of dollars by leasing Nevada lands to energy companies that engage in fracking operations.

This document from the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology shows significant exploratory drilling being conducted in precisely the same area where the Bundy family has been running cattle since the 1870′s. The "Gold Butte" area is indicated on the lower right corner of the document (see below), and it clearly shows numerous exploratory drilling operations have been conducted there.

What's also clear is that oil has been found in nearby areas and possibly even within the Gold Butte area itself.

It is, of course, customary for the U.S. government to bring armed soldiers to an oil dispute. (Operation "Iraqi Freedom" for starters…) Heavily armed snipers, helicopters and militarized soldiers have never been invoked over tortoises. (Anyone who thinks this siege is about reptiles is kidding themselves.)

Open Letter from Fort Hood

My letter to Congress, read today at Texas Senate committee on Constitutional Carry. It is now public record.

To my friends, fellow Texans, brothers in arms, members of the committee, and everyone within the sound of my voice, greetings.

My name is First Lieutenant Patrick Cook of the 49th Transportation Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas, and this past Wednesday I found myself trapped in an enclosed room with fourteen of my fellow Soldiers, one of whom was barricading the door against a madman with a .45 pistol when he was fatally shot. Through what I can only describe as a miracle, he somehow found enough strength to continue pushing against that door until the shooter gave up and went elsewhere, at which time he collapsed. Nearly a week later, I can still taste his blood in my mouth from when I and my comrades breathed into his lungs for 20 long minutes while we waited for a response from the authorities. This Soldier’s name was Sergeant First Class Daniel Ferguson, and his sacrifice loaned me the rest of my life to tell this story . . .

But I write to you today not to memorialize this brave Soldier, nor to tell a war story about how we made the best of a losing situation, but to express the part of that story that some in high positions of power clearly do not want told: I knew this was going to happen. I had been saying for five years that Fort Hood was a tinderbox of another massacre waiting to happen. It had to happen, because our betters failed to learn the obvious lesson of five years ago. Worse yet, I know it will happen again. More will die, more will be wounded, more families will be torn apart, needlessly. It happened again, and will happen again, because Fort Hood is a gun free zone.

"Gun-free zone". The most  insane idea propagated by the lefty-liberal assholes that currently infest Washington and way too many state and local legislatures.

When you prohibit weapons from an area, you create a free-fire zone for the next disgruntled employee or unhinged person who comes along.

Why, if we have met and passed "peak oil" years ago, is EVERYTHING made from plastic these days?

We just were forced into a new refuse hauler - the old one, with trucks that required a human to dump the cans, went out of business.

The new hauler gave us two big plastic wheelie-bins, each marked "350 POUNDS MAX" and "NO HOT ASHES". One has a green lid and is labeled "RECYCLING ONLY" They are designed to be picked up and dumped by a robotic arm on the side of the truck, with little effort by the driver who never has to leave the cab now unless the homeowner does not put the bins close enough to the road.

We have laws that ban certain items from the refuse, and garbage from the recycling bin. How are these laws enforced when the first time the hauler will realize that someone tossed an electronic gadget or flashlight battery - or (gasp!) a vehicle tire or can full of paint or other "chemical" - into the garbage, or worse - into the "RECYCLING ONLY" bin is when they empty the truck? The driver never lifts the lid - it's pushed open by the contents when the bin is up over the top of the truck.

How do communities that mandated clear garbage bags (so the above abuses would be easy to spot) manage with the new collection technology? They must be counting on the sheeple being trained in proper trash etiquette by now...

Lady Bird Johnson's big "Keep America Beautiful" and "Don't Be A Litterbug!" campaign has finally succumbed to politically correctness. Those open top recycling trucks scatter as much trash on the roadside as any fifteen 1960's litter tossers.

At least they provide work for roadside community service crews...

Clean, safe, efficient, and long, long overdue. This has the power to end our dependence on oil and coal for energy, while providing an endless source of gasoline and Diesel for our vehicles - all "environmentally sustainable.

Coal deposits contain the thorium, the thorium provides electricity and heat to convert the coal into liquid fuels. We have enough coal to run these plants for thousands of years.

Maybe by then, we will finally have a working fusion system on-line!

It's irritating to me to see that all the elevators that have been installed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act have notices - "In Case Of Fire, Elevator Is Out Of Service - Use Exit".

OK In case of a real fire, all those people in wheelchairs who used that elevator to access that building are now stuck in there waiting for someone who can carry them down, or immolation, whichever comes first.

How does a blind person find the little Braille signs telling them about washrooms and elevators? For that matter, why isn't the "Elevator Is Out Of Service" sign in Braille? Was some bureaucrat concerned about increasing that person's distress about being trapped in a burning building?

Why hasn't anyone sued the Federal Reserve for making paper money that is illegible to blind people?

I see signs along Ill-Annoys highways stating "EXCESSIVE ENGINE BRAKING NOISE PROHIBITED". Who defines "excessive", and what IS the definition?

Winnebago Country in northern Ill-Annoys just posted a bunch of 2' by 3' signs on some back roads - prohibiting tons of vehicles due to weight. I understand these roads may be susceptible to damage by heavy trucks in the Spring - but exactly what good is a sign like that 1/4 mile from where said truck turned on to that road - and there's no good place to turn around for miles?

And those "DEAD END" signs posted so as to only be visible AFTER you turn into the road? I've seen signs on the same pole as the street name sign telling people there's no outlet. What genius thought up where most of them are placed?

Those expensive walls erected along new highway construction - probably at federal mandate - who decides which neighborhoods DON'T get them? I've seen them erected next to swamps - and ending right next to a bunch of houses. Were the homeowners asked if the WANTED their tax dollars to go toward a big ugly wall in their back yard? Some of these around Chicago are already beginning to crumble...
